Kotlin is a general purpose, free, open source, cross platform programming language that is designed for JVM and Android. Kotlin combines object oriented and functional programming features. Kotlin was designed and developed by JetBrains and it was released in 2011. Kotlin language is preferred for Android app development.

In this tutorial you will learn how you can run Kotlin programs offline on your Android.


Steps to run Kotlin Programs on Android

To run Kotlin programs on Android, you need to install and app called Jvdroid. Jvdroid is the powerful Java IDE and Compiler for Android. Jvdroid can compile Kotlin programs on Android using Kotlin maven plugin. Jvdroid is the first offline Kotlin compiler for Android I have ever seen.

  1. First of all, download Jvdroid from Play Store.
  2. After installing, open the IDE. If you are using the IDE for the first time, it will take some time to install Java. Once installation is complete, you will come to the editor where you can write and compile Java programs.
  3. Open the drawer and click on Samples.

  4. Click on JVM Languages > Kotlin > Extract.

  5. Choose the location where you want to save your Kotlin project and click on Extract.

  6. After extracting the sample Kotlin project, you will come to the editor where you can write your Kotlin console programs. Write your program on the editor.

  7. After writing program on the editor, press the ▶ button to run your Kotlin program.
    If you are running Kotlin program for the first time, it will take some time to download and install Kotlin Maven Plugin. You need to turn on the internet to download the resources.
    After all the resources are downloaded successfully, you can run Kotlin programs offline from next time.
